Start your walk by heading east, up the hill, on Lincoln Way, toward the Massillon Public Library, the imposing red brick building with the green copper dome.
Turn left at Second Street, just before the Library, and walk north to Central Presbyterian Church on your left. You’ll be able to see it best if you use the crosswalk to the Library side of the street.
Keep walking in the same direction (north) on Second Street. Cross Federal Avenue and several more streets until Second Street dead-ends into Cherry Road. Let’s look first at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the light brick Gothic church.
Now, turn around to look across Cherry Road at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church. The darkened stone was partially cleaned, highlighting the details of its impressive façade.
Turn right to walk east (away from the traffic light) on Cherry Road four blocks to Sixth Street Northeast. Turn right, heading south, a little more than two blocks until you’re looking at the Salvation Army on your right.
Continue walking south on Sixth Street until you reach Lincoln Way East. Look diagonally across the intersection to view First Baptist Church.
Turn right (toward downtown) on Lincoln Way and walk two blocks to Fourth Street. Turn right and walk one block to the corner of Federal Avenue.
Turn left and walk one block (downhill toward downtown) on Federal Avenue. Cross Third Street, then turn left and walk one block on Third Street Northeast to Lincoln Way to see the First Church of Christ Scientist.
Look now across Lincoln Way at the large Gothic stone Methodist church.
Cross Lincoln Way and keep walking south on Third Street Southeast to Tremont Avenue. Look diagonally across the intersection at the typical Anglican architecture—a stone church with red doors—the home of St. Timothy’s Church.
Continue walking south two blocks on Third Street Southeast to the corner of South Street where you can see another historic house of worship, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.
Turn right onto South Street and walk to the corner of First Street Southeast. Turn right onto First Street to see the front of the next church building.
Walk north (toward downtown) on First Street Southeast, just one block to find another church. Proceed to the corner of Tremont to get a good look at it.
Cross First Street Southeast, walking west toward the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Viaduct, which you can see in the distance. Travel three blocks to the corner of Second Street Southwest, to get a close-up look at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church.
Retrace your steps along Tremont Avenue, walking eastward back to First Street Southeast, where we talked about St. John’s Church. Turn left and walk north along Veterans Memorial Park toward the Massillon Museum, where you started your walk.
